The TMCP Trailblazer of the Year Award recognizes outstanding outside counsel in the state of Texas who continually promote diversity within the legal profession through hiring, retention, and mentoring of minority, women, and LGBT attorneys; partnering with minority, women, and LGBT–owned law firms; and involvement with Bar and/or community activities designed to promote diversity within the legal profession.
“I am honored to receive this award and be added to the incredible list of recipients. As the leader of a minority and woman-owned business, I am driven to prove that diversity and excellence are not mutually exclusive concepts,” said Amy. “Based on my experience of coaching athletes to reach their full potential, I enjoy helping others in my community thrive. It is our obligation to lift others as we climb.”
Amy embodies the promotion of diversity in the legal profession. Throughout Amy’s career, she worked for a series of “first” firms in Dallas – the first black–owned law firm at White & Wiggins and then at Estes Thorne & Carr, one of the first all-women owned law firms in the city. However, in 2017, Amy wanted to create a truly diverse law firm that embraces lawyers and staff from all walks of life: “Real diversity is unapologetically inclusive, values people from different backgrounds and experiences, and empowers everyone to be involved.”
Accordingly, Amy has put together an incredible team of fierce lawyers to fill the SLG bench: 70% minority employees, 57% female attorneys, and 83% female support staff. During this past summer, Amy started SLAM – Summer Leadership and Mentorship Program which featured three female minority summer clerks hailing from Howard University, Texas A&M School of Law, and University of North Texas – Dallas School of Law.
Stewart Law Group is one of the State’s only certified minority and woman-owned law firms focused on delivering successful outcomes for its business clients involved with general civil litigation, labor and employment, contracts, product liability, arbitrations, personal injury, and insurance defense.
Amy has been honored with numerous industry awards, including the 2021 Best Lawyers in America, 2020 America’s Top 100 Personal Injury Attorneys, 2020 National Black Lawyers Top 100, the 2019 Dallas Business Journal Minority Business Owner Award, 2019 Dallas Bar Association’s Presidential Citation, 2019 Top 50 Women Lawyers in Texas, 2019 American Bar Association 100 Women Who Inspire Us Award, and is a five-time Super Lawyers honoree.
Further, Amy serves in leadership roles as a Council member of the American Bar Association Section of Litigation, Board Member of the Dallas Bar Association, member of the DBA’s Coronavirus Task Force, member of the Dallas Steering Committee of the Diverse Attorney Pipeline Program’s DAPP Direct initiative, and member of the Allied Dallas Bars’ Equality Taskforce. She has also authored a chapter entitled “Be Your on Advocate By Negotiating Fair Compensation” in the book, Her Story: Lessons in Success From Lawyers Who Live It.
“I am grateful and humbled for this recognition from the TMCP, the leading state bar diversity program in the country. I also want to recognize the incredible work of the other finalists who are my friends and I respect greatly: Christa Brown-Sanford at Baker Botts LLP and Kenya Woodruff at Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP. Thank you again for this recognition.”
